Welligence GHG | Navigating a Potential Emissions Cap for Canada’s Oil Sands
November 20, 2024
Canada’s oil sands have long been a key economic driver in the Alberta region and in Canada, contributing US$209 billion in GDP for 2023. With this economic contribution, however, the oil sands are also a significant source of emissions, together with the rest of the oil and gas industry accounting for 31% of Canada’s total. This November, Canada released their draft of a planned emissions cap for the industry, which will seek to effectively limit emissions to 35% below 2019 levels by 2030. The plan is for the cap to be confirmed in 2025, with the largest oil and gas producers (>30 Mboe/d) expected to begin reporting their emissions for the 2026 year.
