Welligence Africa LNG: Plugging the EU’s gas gap – Can Sub-Saharan Africa play a key role?

The European Union’s (EU) push to wean itself off Russian gas imports has been grabbing headlines for months. Last year, Russia accounted for almost 40% of EU’s total gas consumption, equivalent to almost 115 MT of LNG. With large volumes of new supply expected to come from Qatar and the US over the next five years, the EU will be primarily looking to these countries to plug the gap. But it will also want to further diversify its supply sources. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is a proven LNG supplier into Europe and another option to reduce EU dependence on Russian supply.
