Venezuela Politics | Maduro claims victory in controversial presidential election

On 28 July 2024, Venezuela held its presidential election in which incumbent President Nicolas Maduro sought re-election, running against former diplomat Edmundo González. González represented a coalition of opposition parties. Maduro was declared the winner by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) with 51.2% of the vote (80% counted) versus 44.2% for González. Other candidates received the remaining 4.2% of the vote. If the results hold, President Maduro will be in power until 2031.
