Scope 3 emissions have, until recently, taken a backseat to Scope 1 and 2 emissions when analyzing the environmental effects of the upstream sector. Companies have mostly held the stance that these emissions are out of their control and are therefore difficult to manage in the same way as their operated Scope 1 and 2 emissions. However, as European countries continue to maintain a cautious reliance on the oil and gas industry, regulatory attention has turned to understanding and mitigating the end-use effects that new projects will have.
