Offshore Electrification Sinks in the New Tide of Upstream Decarbonization

December 2, 2025

Offshore electrification in the North Sea is becoming increasingly uneconomic, even with Norwegian carbon prices reaching 237 USD/ton by 2030, pushing Norway and the UK away from their power-from-shore ambitions. Equinor’s cancelled Halten and Tampen projects show that even a global low-intensity leader is no longer willing to pay the rising abatement cost of offshore electrification. Having already achieved significant upstream decarbonization across Norway, further expenditures no longer provide a competitive advantage.
